How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Information Systems (MAS-GIS) in the School of Geographical Sciences at Arizona State University. To expedite the application process, please send all application materials (recommendation letters as well as transcripts) directly to Robert Balling, MAS-GIS Program Director, at the address below.
The application process is as follows:
Our MAS-GIS Steering Committee, comprised of geography faculty, reviews all applications. Our admission decisions are based on a variety of criteria and we request that you provide us with the following information.
- Submit a statement of interest and commitment to the MAS-GIS program including a description of relevant academic and/or professional experience.
- Submit two letters of support from any combination of current/former instructors, supervisors, or professionals.
- Complete an on-line application “Application for Graduate Admissions .” Send official transcripts directly to Robert Balling at the School of Geographical Sciences.
We strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Classes are ‘cohort-protected’, meaning only those admitted to the program may take the classes using specific Schedule Line Numbers and the program runs one calendar year, including the fall, spring, and summer sessions. These are all evening classes, the fall semester classes are compressed and non-transferable.
Financial Aid
Many students ask about funding for the program, and to that end, a current FAFSA must be on file for any sort of ASU funding. Financial Aid should be spread across the entire program and you need to apply as early as possible for funding for the academic year. Tuition and fees remain subject to change; the costs for the 2007-2008 program were distributed as follows (more details are available from the Graduate College):
| Status | Fall Semester | Spring Semester |
Summer Session | Total Tuition |
| Resident | $7,989 | $7,989 | $4,406 | $20,384 |
| Nonresident | $13,835 | $13,835 | $6,932 | $34,602 |
If you have questions on any other aspect of our MAS-GIS graduate program, please do not hesitate to contact me.
