Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Information Systems
New: Information for students entering the MAS-GIS program Fall 2008
Welcome! We appreciate your interest in the Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Information Systems (M.A.S.-G.I.S.) degree program at Arizona State University. We are extremely proud of our program, our instructors, our campus and facilities, our students and graduates, and the experience and training provided to you during your time with us at ASU. We find that our graduates and current students are our best ambassadors, and we would be delighted to learn that your interest in our program came from interaction with a current or past M.A.S.-G.I.S. student.
As you may already have learned, the M.A.S.-G.I.S. program is a compact one-year nonthesis degree program fostering advanced study in management and the use of G.I.S. technology in public and corporate environments. The degree meets important educational needs of working professionals and recent college graduates seeking to improve their career standing. The program provides a comprehensive professional degree that balances work in the theoretical aspects of G.I.S., the technical side of the discipline and the applications domain. Students are exposed to cutting edge technology, management theory and practice, and several societal dimensions associated with the application of G.I.S. technology. The courses are held in the evenings during the week, the curriculum is highly adaptable to the work environment, and a M.A.S.-G.I.S. degree is achievable in a one-year time period.
A new group of students begins the program each August, attending evening classes during the fall and spring semesters. Upon completion of the spring semester, students select a capstone project that they complete during a summer eight week session. Final presentations take place in mid-July, and in less than 11 months, the degree is complete. The job market in G.I.S. is red-hot, and to date our students have consistently landed rewarding positions in the Phoenix area, and in professional positions throughout the world.
Along with everything else we can offer, spending an academic year in Tempe, Arizona is an experience unto itself. Palm trees, citrus trees, golf, swimming (outside), hiking, interacting with more than 50,000 students on the Tempe campus, evenings on Mill Avenue...being an ASU student is a rewarding and exciting experience.
