How to Apply
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Information Systems (MAS-GIS) in the School of Geographical Sciences at Arizona State University. To expedite the application process, please send all application materials (recommendation letters as well as transcripts) directly to Kay Pealstrom, Graduate Program Coordinator, at the address below.
The application process is as follows:
Our MAS-GIS Steering Committee, comprised of geography faculty, reviews all applications. Our admission decisions are based on a variety of criteria and we request that you provide us with the following information.
- Submit a statement of interest and commitment to the MAS-GIS program including a description of relevant academic and/or professional experience.
- Submit two letters of support from any combination of current/former instructors, supervisors, or professionals currently employed within GIS or a related discipline.
- Complete an on-line application (http://www.asu.edu/gradapp) “Application for Graduate Admissions”. Send official transcripts directly to the School of Geographical Sciences.
We strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible and before April 15. Once the year’s cohort is filled, we start admitting the next year’s cohort. Classes are ‘cohort-protected’, meaning only those admitted to the program may take the classes using specific Schedule Line Numbers and the program runs one calendar year, including the fall, spring, and summer sessions. These are all evening classes, the fall semester classes are compressed and non-transferable, and financial aid is available.
A current FAFSA must be on file for any sort of ASU funding (http://www.asu.edu/fa/apply/file-your-fafsa.html). Tuition and fees remain subject to change; the costs are distributed as follows:
| Status | Resident | Non-Resident |
|---|---|---|
| Fall Semester | $7,814 | $13,107 |
| Spring Semester | $7,814 | $13,107 |
| Summer Semester | $5,414 | $6,513 |
| Total Tuition | $21,042 | $32,767 |
Financial Aid should be spread across the entire program. You will need to apply in March for summer funding.
