About Us

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Web pages of the School of Geographical Sciences at Arizona State University. This is an exciting time for geographical sciences at ASU, with several active interdisciplinary research programs, new initiatives and centers. The school itself has only existed as such since July 2006 and grew out of the Department of Geography, which has a long and distinguished history. The school is evolving into a scholarly community that engages in interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary education, research and outreach dealing with substantive and applied questions where the role of place, space and interaction is central. These themes are also important in the vision of the New American University, which emphasizes local and social embeddedness and global engagement, suggesting a major role for geographical sciences.
